The Identity Shift

I spent 6 months "thinking about consulting."

I read books.

Made spreadsheets.

Bought courses.

Designed a logo I never used.

I told people I was "exploring my options" and "figuring out my niche."

You know what I wasn't doing?

Talking to anyone who could actually hire me.

Because deep down, I didn't feel like a "real" consultant.

I felt like a corporate employee pretending. An imposter in a costume. Someone who needed just one more certification, one more course, one more month of preparation before I was "ready."

Then a friend asked me a question that changed everything:

"Do you have skills people would pay for?"

Yes.

"Have you solved problems worth money?"

Yes.

"Then why are you waiting for permission?"

I didn't have an answer.

That week, I changed one thing.

I stopped saying: "I'm thinking about getting into consulting."

"VP of Operations at [Company]" feels real.

"Independent Consultant" feels... made up?

When you change the frame, everything changes — how you show up, how you talk about yourself, and how others respond to you.

They'll either say "Oh interesting, tell me more" or "I know someone who might need that."

That's how it starts.

Not with a website. Not with a content calendar. Not with a niche.

With words. Your words. About yourself.
